Tanzania, Dar es Salaam
Tanzania motorists have had
their first taste of natural gas
vehicles with three converted
vehicles going on display at an
international trade fair in Dar
es Salaam. The display precedes
an expected rollout of public
compressed natural gas (CNG)
refueling stations with the
first due to be operational by
December of this year.
The Tanzania Standard newspaper
reports that the Tanzania
Petroleum Development
Corporation (TPDC) displayed the
three vehicles, a Suzuki Grand
Vitara, Toyota Mark II and Isuzu
Double Cabin to raise interest
ahead of the establishment of
the CNG stations. The report
quotes a TPDC official as saying
that at this stage three
stations are planned, with the
first to be established at
Ubungo to be followed by to
others within Dar es Salaam.
Conversion costs are expected to
be in the region of 1 million
Tanzanian shillings ($US800)
while fuel costs are expected to
be reduced 60% relative to
gasoline.
