Natural Gas Buses Hit
the Streets of
Mozambique

Abundant natural gas available

Natural gas powered buses have
begun plying the streets of
Mozambique’s capital Maputo,
with four buses launched by
publicly owned bus company TPM
last week.
All Africa reports that the
buses, manufactured by Yutong in
China, are part of a government
strategy to introduce natural
gas vehicles to lower the
country’s fuel costs.
Transport Minister Antonio
Mungwambe said, "In the case of
public transport, these buses
will be an experiment. We hope
the experiment is successful so
that we can import more of
them".
Private gas distribution company
Autogas, will supply compressed
natural gas (CNG) for the buses,
installing compression and
dispensing equipment at the TPM
depot within the next four
months. The general manager of
Autogas. Andri Hugo, told
reporters that fuel costs would
be 35-40 per cent cheaper than
petrol.
The All Africa report says the
bus carries seven cylinders of
CNG, with a total capacity
equivalent to 200 litre,
delivering a 400 km driving
range.
Natural gas is sourced from
within Mozambque, coming from
the gas fields in Inhambane
province.
